Saudi Aramco donates US$120,000 for Malaysia stem education programme

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — Saudi Aramco (Malaysia), as part of its continuous corporate social responsibility, has contributed US$120,000 (approx. RM499,200) to help support underprivileged students in Malaysia via a three-year educational tuition programme.

The contribution which was made under the company’s Citizenship Donation programme, was aimed to benefit some 1,500 underprivileged students of the Mara Education Foundation (YPM)’s SMART TUITION PROGRAMME @ KPLB, according to Saudi Aramco (Malaysia) in a statement posted on its website.

Saudi Aramco (Malaysia)’s managing director, Saad Al-Qahtani had presented a cheque of US$120,000 to YPM’s chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Nizar Sudin in a ceremony held at the MARA Tower here, last month.

In his remarks during the ceremony, Qahtani expressed Saudi Aramco (Malaysia)’s commitment to extend the company’s values and contribution to the people and environment in its area of operations.

“We are actively involved in making a difference in the communities in which we live and work” he said.

He also emphasised that Saudi Aramco (Malaysia)’s donation and support would further compliment the excellent work YPM has been doing and the value YPM adds to the communities.

SMART TUITION PROGRAMME @KPLB is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education Programme that provides tuition classes and preparatory guidance for the underprivileged public school students; aged 17 years from the rural areas and B40 families, in order to prepare them to sit for the SPM examination.

Saudi Aramco (Malaysia) added that at present, a total number of 72,697 public school students have benefited from the SMART TUITION PROGRAMME @KPLB since its inception in 2013.

The statement added that Saudi Aramco (Malaysia) will be the benefactor of five YPM education centres in the state of Johor for three consecutive years, 2021-2023.

The five YPM education centres are located in five different areas in Johor, namely Johor Baharu, Batu Pahat, Muar, Pontian and Mersing.

For each YPM education centre, 100 students from the nearby public schools will be sponsored by Saudi Aramco (Malaysia), annually, to attend the tuition programme; cumulatively 1,500 students will benefit by the programme, the statement said.
