Exco: Local councils scouting for suitable places to put EV chargers

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Dec 1 — Two local authorities in Selangor are identifying suitable locations to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

Referring to the Shah Alam City Council and the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the selection of suitable areas is being done together with the EV private industry.

“For the time being, we have received several recommendations, but we welcome more suggestions so that Selangor can become the pioneer for EV station projects in Malaysia,” he said when met outside the Selangor State Legislative Assembly yesterday.

Ng said the state government is aiming to install 1,000 chargers on parking lots owned by local authorities by next year, and 10,000 by 2025.

He added the initiative must be carried out immediately to ensure Selangor continues to pave the way as well as aid in reducing carbon pollution.

“EV stations are becoming more popular abroad. Not just for cars but for other vehicles including vans, buses, trucks, and garbage trucks,” Ng said.

During the tabling of the 2022 Selangor Budget on Friday, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced the project to install EV charging stations in the state, with an investment value of RM10 million.

He proposed incentives be given to businesses and industries which invest in EV infrastructure, including the reduction of license fees and assessment taxes.

Amirudin also said EV users will be given free parking privileges under local authorities by next year.
