Succour for Rawangites as reservoir pond project addresses flooding and pollution

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Dec 2 — The development of a flood reservoir pond at the Sungai Gong river in Gombak, to overcome the flooding and pollution issue will be a relief to the estimated 100,000 residents in Rawang, once the project finishes in 2023.

Rawang assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat said the project, which began last year, is still actively carried out at the site and will continue until the RM15 million in additional funds provided by the 2022 Selangor Budget has been fully utilised.

“The project to enlargen the reservoir pond and add to its functionality is a holistic action to resolve flooding problems and pollution in Sungai Gong, which prior to this was one of the causes for the water supply disruption.

“With the additional allocation, I believe the project will be carried out smoothly and will benefit hundreds of thousands of residents, since flooding frequently occurs at the highway and main road,” he told SelangorKini.

Chua added although the project is yet to be completed, its positive impact can be seen as the floods have become less frequent compared to previous years.

“Rawang is always sensitive to rainfall. Prior to this, 15 minutes of heavy rain could cause flooding to arise, but from what I can see there have been no floods this year,” he said.

During the tabling of the budget on Friday, the state government announced a RM35 allocation for two reservoir ponds, which will be carried out by the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department.

Of this figure, RM15 million will go to the Rawang integrated flood reservoir pond, and RM20 million for the Kampung Budiman flood reservoir pond.
