Selangor to expand disinfectant technology, curb diseases after floods

By Mustakim Ramli

SHAH ALAM, Jan 9 — The Selangor government will introduce and expand the effective microorganism (EM) technology to disinfect flood-hit areas to prevent the spread of diseases after the floods.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state administration is not only focusing on clearing up the waste in affected areas but also disinfecting the 11 waste transfer stations in the state.

“The waste that is collected at the transfer stations had been there for more than 10 days and it left harmful bacteria that could contribute to diseases.

“We believe that this EM can kill these bacteria and reduce the stench coming from the waste,” said Amirudin after overseeing the post-flood rehabilitation programme in Kampung Padang Jawa here, yesterday.

Meanwhile, Batu Tiga state assemblyman Rodziah Ismail said close to 10,000 homes that were affected by floods will be disinfected using EM technology.

“This involves three villages, namely Padang Jawa Petaling, Padang Jawa Klang and Kebun Bunga. Disinfectant works will all be carried out in alleys.

“The EM technology would not of kill the bacteria and remove the stench but it also produces organic fertilizers that can be used for crops,” she added.
