Big data from SSP helps state plans future parking development

By Sheeda Fathil

SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — The implementation of the Smart Selangor Parking (SSP) digital parking system provided the state government with tools to track areas experiencing parking woes.

State executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said big data from SSP would help in the planning of various parking facilities in the future.

“One of the benefits of SSP is that we can track parking locations that are most frequented by motorists.

“From this data, we can do planning to build multi-storey car parks or various other parking facilities,” he told SelangorKini.

According to him, the state government also plans to implement short-term parking zones, for a maximum of two hours in the near future.

“With this method, everyone can park. For example, in popular areas, the on-street parking is always full making it difficult for other road users to park.

“We will ask the local authorities to identify areas to implement short-term parking zones, either at areas where there are banks or popular restaurants,” he said.

From January 3 this year, the state government abolished the on-street parking fees using coin machines or scratch-and-display manual coupons and enforced e-coupons through the SSP app, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or from the Google Play Store.

However, the public is allowed to finish up the scratch-and-display manual coupons they had purchased beforehand, by March 31.

With the app, users only have to fill in their car registration number and pay based on the parking period.

For the general public who do not own a smartphone or SSP app, physical e-coupon agents will be available as an alternative.
