Assemblyman urges for groundwater sources study to be expedited in anticipation of drought

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, March 22 — A study of groundwater sources, lakes and mines should be carried out as soon as possible in order to prepare for the drought predicted to occur in 2025, said Sentosa state assemblyman Dr G. Gunaraj.

He said engagement sessions with landowners should also be expedited so an agreement can be reached on using their groundwater source as an alternative during emergencies.

Dr Gunaraj also recommended a study of groundwater treatment technology be conducted since the Malaysian Mineral and Geoscience Department’s expertise is limited to constructing wells.

“We take note of the fact that not all groundwater sources identified thus far can provide supply to water treatment plants, as their capacity is low.

“But we feel further studies ought to be conducted so the water can be channelled for the use of the community, the private sector or industries,” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session yesterday.

Dr Gunaraj added the infrastructure and allocations necessary for this purpose should be identified so the potential disaster can be dealt with, in addition to forming an effective communication system for society.

It is also necessary for agencies to form special standard operating procedures among each other based on the seriousness of the situation, which includes light, moderate and dangerous.

“Seeing as how accurate weather predictions can only be provided between two to six months before it occurs, the construction of additional infrastructure and complicated planning cannot be carried out in such a short time.

“Planning based on worst-case scenarios must be immediately made to ensure the water supply is not cut off for Selangor residents, in the event of a prolonged drought,” he said.
