Selangor unemployment rate drops to under three pct — Exco

SHAH ALAM, March 15 — The unemployment rate in Selangor has declined to 2.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2021, compared to 4.4 per cent in the second quarter of the same year.

Citing statistics issued by the Labour Department, state executive councillor for youth development Mohd Khairuddin Othman said overall, the unemployment rate in the state is considered to be under control.

“Selangor is in second place after Putrajaya, which has a 1.6 per cent unemployment rate. However, if we were to compare the number of residents with the unemployment rate, Putrajaya has around 91,000 residents in contrast to Selangor, with an estimated 6.5 million residents.

“Therefore, we regard the 2.9 per cent unemployment rate to be within reason due to a reduction from over four per cent in the same year,” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly earlier today.

Mohd Khairuddin was responding to a query from Bukit Melawati assemblyman Juwairiya Zulkifli on the unemployment rate within Selangor.

He added that with strong support from the Menteri Besar, the state administration would continue to organise the Selangor career fair on a larger scale this year.

“As of now, the programme was held in six localities including Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Kubu Bharu, Hulu Selangor, Hulu Langat and Petaling. It recorded a successful rate of 27 per cent, whereby 716 job seekers managed to secure jobs from the fair’s participating companies.

“We would also like to encourage youths to change their mindsets and work in the manufacturing sector as I notice they remain quite sceptical over it. We will also work together to review the wage scheme for the manufacturing sector as one way to attract youths and provide technical skills under various programmes,” he said.
