RS-1: Aviation, maritime economic zones to propel state’s economy — MB

By Alang Bendahara

SHAH ALAM, July 27 — The First Selangor Plan (RS-1) will focus on developing the aerospace industry and lands along Sungai Klang to boost state economic growth.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said Malaysia’s comprehensive aerospace ecosystem and Selangor’s strategic location made the state ideal as a hub for the industry.

“It is estimated that 63 per cent of the 240 aerospace companies and aerospace-related companies in Malaysia are based in Selangor, thus making the state an aerospace hub.

“In line with the aim outlined in the Selangor Aerospace Action Plan 2020 – 2030, the Selangor International Aero Park (SAP) project has been identified as a catalyst to ensure both Selangor and Malaysia become an aerospace hub in the regional and international arena,” he said while tabling RS-1 during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here today.

On May 18, 2020, Amirudin said the main scope of the aerospace industry is maintenance, repairs, manufacturing, integration systems, engineering, design, and training.

By 2030, aerospace manufacturing activity in Malaysia is estimated to generate RM21.2 billion in revenue, while repairs and maintenance are expected to bring in RM20.4 billion, and engineering and design to bring in RM13.6 billion.

The Menteri Besar said Selangor will also launch the Economic Development Zone Selangor Maritime Gateway (EDZ SMG) to develop lands along Sungai Klang to stimulate the state’s economy.

“The EDZ SMG will act as an economic development corridor involving 27,960 hectares of land along Sungai Klang with an estimated investment of RM2.2 billion,” he said.

Previously, Amirudin had said that SMG is expected to rake in over RM1 billion in investments by 2030.

Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), has been appointed by the Selangor government to manage SMG.

Four key pillars — river cleaning, river connectivity, river development and rehabilitation — had been identified as key drivers within the SMG project.
