Sidec stepping up to boost moderate fashion brands to penetrate global market

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, July 30 — The Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) is determined to help owners of modest fashion brands in the state to expand their businesses on the global level, through a virtual platform.

Its chief executive officer Yong Kai Ping said Sidec is aware of the need to embrace the fashion industry, as part of the digitisation of small-and medium-enterprises (SME) and local start-ups.

He said the Selangor Fashion Accelerator (SFA) programme, introduced for the first time this year, is the right step in supporting modest fashion businesses.

“Since there are not many programmes dedicated to the fashion industry, Sidec has come forward to support modest fashion brand owners so their businesses can be expanded to other nations including Indonesia and Vietnam.

“In addition, within Malaysia, there are no outstanding modest fashion brands while the market can become wider if said brands are provided with training and exposure,” Yong said.

He was speaking at a press conference following the announcement of the 16 selected participants who will undergo the SFA 2022 programme, at the Hilton Hotel i-City yesterday.

Meanwhile, Yong acknowledged that moderate fashion is now a necessity for enthusiasts in Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia.

“In a multiracial country like ours, fashion trends have changed. This is visible through the evolution of simple fashion since it shows style, urbanity and elegance.

“At the same time, it maintains the unique characteristics of a moderate design based on Southeast Asian culture,” he said.
