SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) has reminded strata property owners that any renovations and construction of structures to their units needed approval from the Joint Management Body (JMB) and Management Corporation (MC).

Its president Najmuddin Jemain said any strata building is subjected to the Strata Management Act 2013 (Act 757).

He said under the Act, owners were not allowed to carry out any renovation to their units without first obtaining approval from the management body, and when necessary, from the local authority.

“Besides, the strata property owners are only allowed to do so in their respective lot and not in the common areas. JMB and MC are responsible for ensuring building maintenance, administrative affairs and financial management.

“However, if needed, the local authority or council can give advice through the Commissioner of Building Department (COB,” he said during the local council’s full board meeting, yesterday.

Recently, the illegal renovation in Flat Kasawari, Seri Kembangan, which had violated the strata property rules had gone viral on social media.

More than 40 units there had been illegally renovated by putting up awnings for parking and fences in common areas, building garages and stores as well as extending their homes into common areas.
