Sukma 2022 to offer over 400 gold medals in 31 sports

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 — The 20th Malaysia Games or Sukma to be hosted in Kuala Lumpur from September 16 to September 24, will feature 426 events in 31 sports comprising 223 events for men, 184 for women and 19 mixed events.

The Sukma organising committee that met today also confirmed that Brunei will be part of the competition that will be held in the Klang Valley and in Langkawi, Kedah.

Just like other major events, athletics and swimming will offer the highest number of gold medals – 44 and 43 respectively – followed by canoe (33), cycling (30), shooting (26), pencak silat (26), wushu (25) and gymnastics (21).

Boxing (12), football (1) and cricket (1) make up the rest.

Sukma organising committee chairman Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan said that based on the confirmed registration that was shortlisted on Aug 10, the Sukma this year will see 6, 606 athletes and 1,811 officials from 15 contingents taking part.

The Federal Territories registered the biggest contingent with 736 athletes and officials followed by Sarawak (734), Perak (698), Johor (688), Kedah (683), while Brunei will have the smallest contingent with 42 athletes and officials.

Jana Santhiran said Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) will be the main cluster for Games Village, housing 4,203 athletes and officials followed by Universiti Malaya (2,218), Universiti Teknologi Mara (1,208), Universiti Tenaga Nasional (429), Dayang Bay Resort Langkawi (219) and NSC Paralympics Excellence Centre (303).

“We have identified 43 competition venues in five zones — Kuala Lumpur (eight types of sports and two demonstrations), Bangi (nine sports), Bukit Jalil (nine sports), Shah Alam (eight) and Langkawi (sailing). Football will be the first sport to kick off on Sept 12.

“Three other sports, namely wushu, cycling road race and sepak takraw will start on September 14,” he said in a statement today.

The opening and closing ceremonies are scheduled on September 17 and September 24 respectively, at the Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Razak (Dectar) in UKM, Bangi.
