SUBANG JAYA, Sept 2 — Selangor’s women’s hockey squad and the weightlifting team are confident of garnering gold medals in the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma 2022).

The Selangor contingent has listed the two sports among the games it hopes to win 40 gold medals during the tournament, held from September 16 to September 24.

Women’s hockey player Noratasya Adila Norhisam, 22, said her team will be defending the gold they won at Sukma 2018 in Perak.

“This is our last year in the team and we will certainly give it our best, even though we will face a big challenge against Terengganu in the group stage.

“We will try to defend the gold we won in 2018, and are confident all the training we have undergone will bear fruit despite having to train separately two years ago due to Covid-19,” she said.

Noratasya was speaking at the Selangor Contingent Camp for Sukma 2022, held at the Grand Dorsett Hotel earlier today.

Meanwhile, weightlifter Muhammad Rashdan Mat Sulaiman, 22, said he will work hard to win gold after missing out on Sukma 2018 due to an injury.

InsyaAllah, I will give it my best for Selangor. I admit there is some pressure when listed to target for gold, but I will use it as motivation for us to achieve it.

“Encouragement from parents, coaches, friends and teachers has given me the strength to do so,” he said.

The Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) previously set the target for its Sukma 2022 contingent at over 40 gold medals.

Its executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said the target is achievable since Selangor had won more than 50 gold medals in the previous Sukma.
