Parliament dissolved, state assemblies advised to follow suit — PM

By Jerry Choong

SHAH ALAM, Oct 10 — The 14th Parliament of Malaysia has been dissolved, after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong granted his consent, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In a special address, he said the consent was granted by Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah during an audience at midday yesterday.

“In line with Article 40(2)(b) and Article 55(2) of the Federal Constitution, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong granted his consent to my request for the dissolution of the 14th Parliament of Malaysia, effective Monday, October 10, 2022,” Ismail said.

The prime minister said he advises the heads of the state governments except for Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka and Johor to take the necessary steps to dissolve their respective state assemblies on the same date as the general election on the Parliamentary level.

“It ought to be done simultaneously to ensure the people are not burdened, as well as to guarantee the smoothness of the democratic process and to save costs.

“On the subject of the dates for nominating candidates, the polling day, and other related matters, this will be left up to the Election Commission to decide,” he said.

Ismail added the decision to dissolve the Parliament was made in order to return the mandate to the people.

“The people’s mandate is a panacea to the nation’s political stability and to form a solid, firm and respectable government after the 15th General Election. The process is based on the parliamentary democratic and constitutional monarchy system, which has been the guiding source of rule since Independence.

“The dissolution was carried out to quell the voices which have cast doubts and aspersions on the government’s legitimacy, decrying it as a back-door government, among others. May the people use the power granted to them to select a government of their choosing,” he said.
