Moving towards a liveable, smart city, says Shah Alam mayor

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Dec 6 — Newly appointed mayor Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Halim is committed to transforming Shah Alam into a smart, livable and prosperous city, in line with the core elements outlined in the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).

He said that the five-year blueprint tabled at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting in July had also set the same target by 2025.

“A smart city’s fundamental goal is to maximise the application of digital technology in municipal functions to improve the quality of life for citizens, stakeholders, developers, and industry players.

“We have digitised several services, including paying for parking via the Setel app, i-Aset, accepting cashless payments, and integrating Shah Alam’s smart monitoring system,” he said in his speech after the swearing-in ceremony as the city’s 10th mayor at the Town Hall at Wisma MBSA, here yesterday.

Nor Fuad said to make Shah Alam a livable city, the city council would also strengthen current services in addition to diversifying innovations that offer convenience and safeguard the safety of the residents.

“MBSA (Shah Alam City Council) would have to meet the target set under the Malaysia Liveability Index (iDAM) as recommended by the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT),” he said in reference to the initiative introduced by KPKT to help cities benchmark their levels of well-being, quality of life and livability.

“Among the main criteria include the quality of a sustainable and safe government and quality basic infrastructure.”

Nor Fuad stated that to achieve the goal of a prosperous city, the city council would have to proactively promote sustainable development in all of its departments.

He said that it should also be expanded to all state government agencies, private companies, higher learning institutions and schools.

“The objective should be implemented in community programmes, infrastructural development projects and provision of public facilities,” he added.
