KAJANG, Jan 5 — The state government remains confident that Selangor will remain the top destination for local and foreign tourists this year, amid Malaysia’s move to tighten its international borders to curb the spread of Covid-19.

State executive councillor for tourism Hee Loy Sian expressed his optimism over the fact the standard operating procedures (SOP), which were announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday, will not dissuade tourists from visiting the country, particularly Selangor.

“Even though the Prime Minister said the new SOPs for foreign tourists will be stricter, including those from China, I do not believe it is a reason to stop them from coming here.

“Strict SOPs may refer to vaccination. Those who have completed their vaccination can enter Malaysia, or they have to undergo screening first. To me, this is a normal procedure,” he said today.

For the record, Selangor reported the arrival of 10.2 million visitors soon after the reopening of the country’s border in 2021, the highest compared to other states.
