Bursa Malaysia lower at midmorning

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — Bursa Malaysia was lower at midmorning as investors traded cautiously ahead of US key prints tonight to further gauge the Federal Reserve tone in terms of interest rate direction.

At 11am, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) fell 1.25 points to 1,454.25 from Monday’s closing of 1,455.50.

The index opened 0.99 of-a-point higher at 1,456.49.

Market breadth remained negative with decliners surpassing advancers 516 to 221, while 315 counters were unchanged, 1,195 untraded and 55 others suspended.

Turnover stood at 1.68 billion units worth RM705.76 million.

Among the heavyweights, Tenaga Nasional slipped 21 sen to RM9.43, Press Metal dropped eight sen to RM5.07, and Digi was five sen lower at RM4.25.

Meanwhile, CIMB added four sen to RM5.58, while Maybank and Public Bank rose three sen each to RM8.78 and RM4.18, respectively.

As for the active stocks, Panasonic Malaysia reduced 48 sen to RM23.46, YSP declined 41 sen to RM2.41, and Ajinomoto eased 22 sen to RM13.92.

On the index board, the FBM Emas Index trimmed 24.08 points to 10,581.17, the FBMT 100 Index edged down 7.47 points to 10,270.67, the FBM ACE Index fell 84.25 points to 5,452.46, the FBM Emas Shariah Index reduced 52.34 points to 10,807.69, and the FBM 70 Index slid 4.16 points to 13,430.33.

Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index added 41.54 to 16,172.56, the Energy Index shed 38.55 points to 851.39, the Plantation Index rose 15.20 points to 6,784.64, and the Industrial Products and Services Index shaved 0.89 of-a-point to 177.17.
