Defence Minister extends condolences to Edrin’s family

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 — Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has extended his condolences to the family of the late Lance Corporal Edrin Baintim, the commando who drowned while on combat diving training in Pulau Undan, Melaka, last February 7.

“My heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Edrin. His loss is not only deeply felt by the family but also all members of the Malaysian Armed Forces. His demise is a great loss to the country.

“May his family members remain strong in facing this moment of grief,” he said in a post on his Facebook page.

Mohamad also expressed his gratitude to the teams involved in the search and rescue (SAR) operation for Edrin, especially the Malaysian Army, the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Royal Malaysian Air Force, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the police and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.

On February 7, Edrin, 25, who is a member of the Army’s special forces unit, was reported missing while undergoing diving training 0.7 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Undan.

The victim is said to have disappeared during the ‘Pari Harimau’ diving exercise he was attending which comprised six officers and 37 participants from the Sungai Udang Special Warfare Training Centre.

His body, clad in a diving suit, was found in a mangrove swamp at Batu 8, Kg Batu Laut, Tanjung Sepat, Selangor by members of the public at about 10.30am yesterday.
