University-industry sector cooperation must be strategic — Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — The cooperation between universities and the industry sector must be strategic, as well as carefully planned and executed to ensure both parties reap the benefits, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

This cooperation must also be done with the aim of streamlining operations, technology and current practices.

“Universities cannot operate or just follow the industry’s wishes. Any demands or pressures of the industry must be scrutinised and done in a balanced, objective and practical way,” he said when delivering a speech at the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Universiti Malaysia (UM) and Infinity Logistics and Transport Sdn Bhd (Infinity) here today.

The MoU involving UM’s Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FSKTM) and Infinity is aimed at strengthening the logistics industry and equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to meet the industry’s evolving demands.

At the signing ceremony, UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor and FSKTM dean Prof Loo Chu Kiong represented the university, while Infinity was represented by its managing director Datuk Seri Chan Kong Yew and executive director Datuk Ethan Kwan.
