Selangor forms technical, vocational education centre to meet skilled workers’ needs

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — The state government implemented technical education and vocational training (TVET) by establishing the Selangor Technical Development Centre (STDC).

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said despite a few constraints, technical education institutions must be established so students can fill job opportunities with specific skills.

“Many have pointed out that Malaysia lacks manpower, and during several sessions to attract domestic and foreign investors, we face the quandary of making them confident and providing certain skills.

“Selangor established STDC to control between 70 to 80 per cent of the manufacturing sector, and has now succeeded in establishing cooperation with Siemens, Apple, Festo and Dassault System,” he said during the debate on the Supply Bill (Budget) 2023 in Parliament yesterday.

Amirudin, who is also the Gombak MP, said the high allocation provided to the Education Ministry under Budget 2023 is crucial, and ought to be supported.

“The budget is not only related to economic programmes but must return to the basics, which is the education field.

“Basic education is important and must be supported, to ensure we have sufficient TVET skills,” he said.

STDC is a technical education institution under the state government, with Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI as its largest shareholder.

The centre is a rebranding of INPENS International College in Kuala Selangor, which took place in August 2020 to empower TVET.
