Zoo Negara receives over RM9 mln in aid within five years

KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 — Zoo Negara received assistance amounting to RM9.86 million from the federal government from 2018 to 2022, said Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Of the amount, RM8.5 million was provided by the Finance Ministry to help with the operating costs of Zoo Negara, which is fully operated by a non-governmental organisation, the Malaysian Zoological Society, while RM1.36 million was to cover the cost of wildlife food, husbandry management and medicine through the Wildlife Welfare Caring Fund under the Covid-19 Fund initiative.

According to Nik Nazmi, Taiping Zoo and Night Safari received an allocation of RM4.8 million during the same period, namely RM3.8 million to upgrade zoo facilities and RM1 million for wildlife management and welfare.

“In terms of tourists attendance from 2018 to 2022, Zoo Negara recorded 1,513,292 tourists, while the Taiping Zoo & Night Safari recorded 3,074,852 tourists,” he said in reply to a question from Taiping MP Wong Kah Woh on the allocation given to Zoo Negara and Zoo Taiping in Dewan Rakyat today.
