Comprehensive regional framework crucial to driving SAF pathways — Industry players

LANGKAWI, May 24 — The aviation industry needs a comprehensive regional collaboration framework to build several pathways to drive sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) usage towards greater heights to contribute towards net zero carbon emissions.

Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd group chief sustainability officer Philip See Yew Jin noted that the region has yet to have visibility on the opportunities available and the efficiency to implement sustainable fuel for aircraft.

“What is happening now is a patchwork of different legislation with various offices putting in different ways to address the issue,” he said at the Langkawi Aviation Summit 2023 in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA’23).

See added the aerospace community as a whole needs to come together and work collaboratively using big data to maximise the drive towards sustainability, safety and resiliency.

Echoing a similar thought, Petronas Lubricants Marketing Malaysia Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Hardeep Singh Kirpal Singh said the challenge has always been in getting a sustainable supply of materials to produce SAF.

“While we speak of the availability of SAF from a producer’s standpoint, it is also important that we have an adequate supply of sustainable raw materials.

“Where there is some form of collaboration, together with a regional framework, there would be better clarity on how to position investments in SAF,” he said.

SAF is a renewable alternative to fossil fuels and could lower greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 per cent in aircraft. More than 480,000 commercial flights have been using the fuel globally since 2011.
