SHAH ALAM, May 9 — A total of 61 per cent of the 3,273 cases lodged with the Selangor Syariah Prosecution Department were resolved by the Selangor Syariah Court last year.

State executive councillor for Islamic affairs Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said marriages without permission, unregistered marriages, and marriages abroad constituted the highest types of cases reported.

“A total of 61 per cent of the cases have been successfully resolved, with the rest ongoing. Most of the cases received pertained to marriage issues, and could not be resolved as the accused could not be traced.

“There are also many cases of marriages, in which the individuals are fearful and selfish, which ends up creating problems if and when they should pass on.

“Those who get married abroad, or have done so without permission, need to immediately go to court to resolve it. I request for all parties to cooperate with one another, so as to resolve postponed and long-delayed cases,” he said.

Earlier today, Mohd Zawawi officiated the Sharia Criminal Legislation Day, themed Evolusi Perundangan Jenayah Syariah Selangor, at the Shah Alam Convention Center.

He said the purpose of the event is to provide information about the development and legislation of Syariah to the public.

“The (Syariah Justice) department is now in its fifth year, with many changes and reforms made, especially when it concerns augmenting the enactment of the Syariah judicial system.

“Various seminars and workshops have been organised, this time involving Form Six students. Doing so can provide early exposure to students, in contrast to previous instances which only involved university students,” Mohd Zawawi said.
