SUBANG JAYA, June 7 — Strong investment from domestic and international companies have propelled Selangor into an economic powerhouse, where the state is expected to contribute to nearly a quarter of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) for 2022, says Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said this is an improvement compared to 2021 when Selangor had contributed 24.8 per cent to the national GDP, a testament to the state’s robust economy and effective policies which makes it a strong investment destination.

However, cautioning against complacency, Amirudin said his administration acknowledges the threats posed by climate change and complications arising from increased urbanisation, public transportation and affordable housing, all of which requires sustainable solutions.

“These challenges represent massive opportunities to progress and grow new industries. New industries and increased investment by government and the private sector will pave the way for a new breed of small and medium enterprises in these sectors.

“New technology will provide increased job opportunities for entrepreneurs, merchants, farmers in higher technology for smart agriculture production, and importantly, better opportunities for women in the workplace,” said Amirudin in his speech at the Selangor Investors Appreciation Awards 2019-2022 held at the Sunway Resort Hotel, here last night.

The award ceremony aims to show the Selangor government’s appreciation to the foreign and domestic companies contributing to the state’s economic success.

In his speech, Amirudin affirmed the state’s commitment to dynamic and strong economic growth through the introduction of the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), a comprehensive medium-term plan, spanning five years, facilitating smoother business operations and creating an environment that nurtures entrepreneurship.

He said other economic policies also include the Integrated Development Region in South Selangor (Idriss) and the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda), which is due to be launched on June 9 (Friday).

“These are some areas I believe can be the foundation for Selangor’s future progress. In the upcoming term, we have to step up our game even further.

“We are not blessed with large amounts of land, large amounts of natural resources. But we have the most significant natural resource of all, our citizens. The best, brightest workers in the country are in Selangor.

“That is why I am confident the people of Selangor, including those of you in front of me today, Please set aside the noise we have heard from some quarters and give this administration another five years as we go to the polls in the coming months.

“In Selangor, we are not in the business of taking over other states, unlike some irresponsible people. We believe in professionalism, in respect, in letting our work do the talking by governing with values and responsibility, whether as administrators in government or in business,” he said.

Also in attendance was the state executive councillor for industry and trade Dato’ Teng Chang Khim and State Secretary Dato’ Haris Kasim.

The event was attended by some 1,500 guests comprising of Selangor’s major industrialists from various economic sectors.

The event was first introduced in 1999. However, following the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was postponed for the last four years.

Notable winners at the ceremony included JYC Battery Sdn. Bhd, Ramly Food Industries Sdn. Bhd, Hartalega NGC Sdn. Bhd, and FGV IFFCO Sdn. Bhd. These companies made significant investments in the state during 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively.
