Penang state assembly to dissolve June 28 — CM

GEORGE TOWN, June 8 — Penang will dissolve its state legislative assembly on June 28 to pave the way for a state election, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said today.

Chow said he would seek an audience with Penang’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak to get consent for the proposed date of the dissolution of the state assembly soon.

Meanwhile, Chow, who is also Penang Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) chairman, said seat allocation between the coalition and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state is now 95 per cent resolved.

“Any negotiation between Harapan and BN is now done at the national level, and the final decision will also be made at the national level.

“We believe there will be more negotiations,” he told a press conference, here.

Prior to this, Chow reportedly said that the negotiation, which began last month, was running smoothly but the decision has yet to be made for several seats due to overlapping claims.

Penang has 40 state seats and in the 14th General Election, Harapan won 37, including two by Bersatu candidates, while BN won two, and PAS, one.

Kedah, Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan and Terengganu did not dissolve their respective state assemblies by the time the country held the GE15.

Leaders of the states, however, agreed to do so within the last two weeks of June to enable state elections to be held simultaneously in the six states.
