Public transportation system to continue getting state’s attention due to vast benefit

HULU SELANGOR, July 3 — Selangor will continue focusing on improving the public transportation network in the state due to the benefit it brings to the people and economy.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said this was why the state has invested heavily in the sector, with RM45 million having been allocated for the Smart Selangor initiative to meet public demand.

He noted that under the Smart Selangor free bus programme, a total of 166 buses have been allocated to cater to more than 50 routes across the state, with 60 million passengers recorded since 2015.

“The transportation sector is a crucial element in strengthening the state economy. This is why we place great attention to it, despite large portions of the system being under federal jurisdiction.

“The state government will also continue focusing on this sector in the future to ensure connectivity between districts and localities,” he said during the launching of the federal-level MyPSV programme at Dewan Dato’ Abdul Hamid, Batang Kali, here, today.

Also present was Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

Previously, Amirudin had said that the public transportation network, particularly in the northern and southern regions of Selangor, will be given extra attention by the state administration.

He added that focus will also be given to ensure better connectivity between different rail services in the state, namely Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and commuter.

Meanwhile, Loke said under the MyPSV initiative, the government will absorb the cost of obtaining a public service vehicle (PSV) license for taxi, bus and e-hailing services, as well as for B2 motorcycle license, for the low income group.

He said the federal government has allocated RM2 million for this purpose, which will benefit 4,000 individuals.

“The allocation covers training and examination costs,” he said, adding that the current rate for bus PSV license is RM2,590, while e-hailing and taxi PSV licenses each cost RM190.
