Selangor’s RiDE aid benefits thousands, more in store if Harapan remains govt

SHAH ALAM, July 11 — Around 3,000 p-hailing riders have benefited from the state’s Roda Darul Ehsan Initiative (RiDE) each year since its inception in 2020, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the programme, which aims to support gig economy workers following the Covid-19 outbreak, has received encouraging responses with a large number of applications.

“RiDE was launched in 2020 in response to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and it has received a positive and significant response from the public.

“Each year, 3,000 young individuals benefit from this programme,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Under the initiative, the state government provides recipients with RM500 in direct cash aid and RM50 in Social Security Organisation contributions.

Amirudin expressed his commitment to continue prioritising the welfare of gig workers if given the mandate in the state elections.

For this year, the state government has allocated up to RM2 million to aid over 3,000 recipients.

On June 11, Amirudin announced an additional RM1 million would be distributed to about 2,000 gig workers due to the high number of applications received from across the state.

RiDE was established by the state government to protect gig workers during the pandemic, considering the community’s reliance on the gig economy.

It was previously reported the programme received over 19,000 applications.
