State poll: Kon Yeow to remain CM if Harapan defends Penang

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — DAP has agreed to name Chow Kon Yeow as the party’s candidate for Penang Chief Minister for the second term in view of the state polls next month.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke, in a statement, said the decision was made unanimously in the party’s candidate selection committee meeting which he chaired last night.

Members of the committee comprised DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng, deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo and vice-presidents Nga Kor Ming and M. Kulasegaran.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been informed about the decision and he, as the chairman of Pakatan Harapan (Harapan), also gave his blessing,” he said.

Loke said the committee also decided to make a major renewal in the state executive council involving DAP representatives if the Harapan-Barisan Nasional coalition retains power in the state in the upcoming polls.

He explained that the renewal process is necessary to ensure the continuity and sustainability of DAP’s leadership in Penang, with a younger, dynamic leadership capable of leading the state towards progress in all areas for the prosperity and well-being of the people.

“The full list of DAP candidates for the state polls will be finalised at the committee’s meeting next week.

“The names of all DAP candidates will be announced at least a week before the nomination day,” he said.

The Election Commission has set the state elections for Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah to be held simultaneously on August 12, with nomination day on July 29 and early voting on August 8.
