Anwar hails TNB, Petronas’ support in country’s energy transition

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today acknowledged the commitment, professionalism and dedication of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) in supporting the nation’s energy transition ambition.

He said the country needs to focus on international collaborations to expedite the energy transition initiative as collective efforts could drive positive change for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

“By working together, we can leverage our collective strengths to accelerate the deployment of renewable technologies, the development of innovative energy storage solutions, and the enhancement of energy efficiency practices.

“Malaysia’s strategic position as Asean’s energy hub lets us play a pivotal role in advancing the region’s sustainable energy future for a net zero Asean,” Anwar said at the launch of Phase 2 of the National Energy Transition Roadmap here today.

The launch was held on the sidelines of the Energy Transition Conference 2023.

Anwar said utility companies such as TNB and Sarawak Energy are progressing in the cross-border business, leveraging the Asean Power Grid to improve broader energy security prospects and further enhance economic integration with neighbouring countries.

“TNB is leading discussions with Asean utilities and governments for resource sharing and flexibility solutions at scale. The move will accelerate the energy transition pace responsibly while balancing energy trilemma elements,” he said.

Anwar said the conference is instrumental in accelerating a responsible energy transition via local and regional collaborations to strengthen inter-regional grid connections, in particular for the Asean region, towards greater energy security.
