Health workers need proper training to treat kids with disabilities — Dr Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Children with disabilities should enjoy equal opportunities in all aspects of life including mobility, education, employment, health and rehabilitation, said Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

She said based on the findings of a study carried out by Unicef Malaysia in 2016, health workers lack sensitivity and were unprofessional towards children with disabilities due to poor awareness and training.

“It is our responsibility as health workers to help these children so they can enjoy a better future,” she said at the 10th anniversary celebration of the paediatric service at Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (HRC) here today.

Also present was Deputy Health Minister Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

Lukanisman said the Health Ministry (MOH) will work with other ministries such as the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry and the Education Ministry to expand the coverage of paediatric rehabilitation services at HRC.

He said MOH will study the need to introduce the service in hospitals and health facilities in other states.
