PUTRAJAYA, Aug 9 — The number of live births in Malaysia increased by 13 per cent to 105,961 in the second quarter of 2023, from 93,799 births in the corresponding period last year, according to the Demographic Statistics released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) today.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said male babies outnumbered female babies in the second quarter of 2023, with 54,747 births compared to female babies at 51,214 births.
“Selangor recorded the highest live births with 20,477 births, while Labuan recorded the lowest at 357 births,” he said.
Meanwhile, a total of 50,239 deaths were recorded in the second quarter of 2023, increased by 0.7 per cent as compared to the second quarter of 2022 at 49,893 deaths.
Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths in the second quarter of 2023, with 7,765 deaths, while Putrajaya had the lowest with 73 deaths.
“Deaths due to Covid-19 decreased 74.4 per cent to 169 deaths in the second quarter of 2023 compared to 660 deaths in the same quarter last year,” Mohd Uzir said, adding that deaths due to Covid-19 contributed 0.3 per cent of the total number of deaths in the second quarter of 2023.
Malaysia’s population in the second quarter of 2023 was estimated at 33.4 million, an increase of 2.1 per cent from 32.7 million in the second quarter of 2022.
He said the male population increased from 17 million to 17.5 million, while the female population increased from 15.7 million to 15.9 million.
“The overall sex ratio of the population is 110 males per 100 females while the sex ratio for citizens is 103 males per 100 females,” Mohd Uzir said.
