Malaysia’s top-tier halal integrity formed on science, innovation — Na’im Mokhtar

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — Malaysia, as a global leader in the halal industry, has set a gold standard of practices in halal integrity and values through science and innovation, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

He said Malaysia aims to expand the halal market’s reach and ensure the benefits of a robust halal ecosystem extend beyond the country’s borders.

“Malaysia’s commitment to the halal industry is not just about economic growth, it is rooted in our values and principles.

“The Prime Minister’s Department, through the dedicated efforts of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim), has remained steadfast in our commitment to upholding the integrity and authenticity of the halal ecosystem,” his speech read at the International Halal Science Conference (IHASC) 2023 today.

His speech was read out by Jakim’s policy deputy director-general Datuk Sirajuddin Suhaimee.

Na’im said the theme of IHASC 2023, Halal Industry Sustainability Through Science, aligns with Malaysia’s goals as the country recognises the role of science and innovation in sustaining a resilient and thriving halal industry.

“We are aspiring for new and creative ideas with regard to halal (practices) and science to emerge from this conference.

“The halal industry should not be limited to the traditional concept alone, but must be creative and innovative in its deliverables, in line with the progress of science and technology, for Islam does not oppose science so long as halal principles remain intact,” he said.

The two-day conference was attended by 57 presenters from various countries including Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Thailand.
