Ministry busts syndicates exploiting subsidised cooking oil in Rawang

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 3 —The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry  busted two syndicates exploiting subsidised cooking oil in Rawang, Selangor yesterday, and seized 12,000 kg of cooking oil worth about RM60,000.

Ministry enforcement (operations) deputy director-general Shamsul Nizam Khalil said the raids were carried out at Sri Pagi business centre and Anugerah Suria Tech Park in Sungai Choh.

Six local men and nine foreigners, including two women, were detained in both raids.

He said in both the raids, the individuals were caught transferring cooking oil into a poly tank and tanker lorry, one at an unnamed premises and the other at an establishment buying and selling used cooking oil.

“The syndicates’ modus operandi was to buy packets of 1 kg subsidised cooking oil, transfer them into a tank, then bottle and sell it at unsubsidised market prices,” he said in a statement today.

He said, a quantity of cooking oil which had already been packed and ready for sale was also found at the premises, adding that motorised pumps, hoses, scissors, closed circuit camera decoders and business documents were also seized.

He said the case has been classified under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and the companies involved will also be investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
