KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 – Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has set in motion plans to support the country’s net-zero aspirations, said chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Majid.
He said this encapsulates concerted planning on generation decarbonisation, enabling flexible renewable energy (RE), cross-border grid exchanges and empowering cross-sectorial electrification and prosumer participation.
Abdul Razak said stakeholders will witness an increase in RE capacity. There will also be enhanced energy efficiency through smart and digital technologies as well as a broader adoption of solar with these three strategic focus areas.
These initiatives also encompass emerging renewable technologies, be it hydrogen, ammonia or storage facilities and a more concentrated regional collaboration in green energy exchanges.
“With more than 70 years of experience in the energy industry, our dedication to both the nation and the industry’s future remains unwavering.
“TNB acknowledges our role within the electricity value chain, and we are determined to actively participate in the agenda for a responsible energy transition programme,” he said at the Energy Transition (ET) Conference 2023.
He also said the conference will be about sharing and exchanging meaningful conversations, knowledge, and experiences to ultimately inspire a comprehensive and strategic solution to at least some of the complexities of the global energy transition.
“The conference deliberations and conversations are categorised into three economic sectors — power, transportation, and cities — mirroring the approach taken by TNB in crafting strategies for cleaner power generation, the future grid and supply network, sustainable cities, and electrification of the transportation sector.”
Post Covid-19, he said the conversation on climate change and climate action has intensified in depth and urgency.
“We are all experiencing firsthand the effects of extreme weather events which are only becoming more frequent, extensive and with increasing severity.
“The pace of facilitating a responsible energy transition not only lies on us but it will also require a joint commitment from all, such as policymakers, suppliers and customers,” he said, adding that the energy transition must respond to people’s aspirations and not stunt or stall economic growth and development.
The event is the region’s largest meeting place on energy transition and looks ahead to the future amid an industry-wide transformation to drive progress to net zero.
The two-day conference which started today brings together local and international thought leaders, experts, industry players, policymakers, and communities from across the value chain to formulate solutions and strategies, stimulate meaningful changes to accelerate energy transition effectively and form collaborations.
