Ampang MP advises MPAJ to hold special day for recyclable items collection

By Suhaila Shahrul Annuar

AMPANG JAYA, Sept 24 — The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) has been encouraged to conduct a special day to collect recyclable items in areas under its jurisdiction.

Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail said doing so will serve to educate and encourage residents to be more disciplined in properly separating their waste.

“Based on my experiences at home, if we have already separated recyclables, we certainly do not want those items to get mixed up with other waste.

“So, if possible, we can work towards establishing a day, for example, on Sundays, dedicated solely to collecting recyclable waste. This way, residents will know and only put out recyclables on that particular day,” she said.

Speaking at the Gotong-Royong Perdana programme yesterday in conjunction with World Cleanup Day 2023, Rodziah said she carried out a similar programme with the Shah Alam City Council two years ago when serving as Batu Tiga state assemblyman.

“It has proven to encourage residents to separate waste at the source. Such a culture can help reduce waste management costs.

“The recycling culture must be nurtured starting from households, and ultimately, we can assist the council in ensuring that waste management costs are reduced, and the funds can be allocated for people’s development activities, especially in providing better public infrastructure,” she said.

Rodziah added that if MPAJ can work on this, perhaps through cooperation with various stakeholders, it can be very beneficial.

“What is important is that residents find it convenient and, ultimately, support recycling culture,” she said.
