KLANG, Sept 29 — Bagan Teo Chew, located along the shorelines of Pulau Ketam here, was in disarray today as a row of wooden houses and fishing docks were ravaged by a fierce fire, reported Kosmo.

The blaze, which broke out around 12:30pm, also claimed three fishing boats anchored near the jetty, said the report.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail confirmed the incident on the island located off the coast of Port Klang, adding that a distress call was made at 1:19pm.

“The incident involved Class C residential properties. Emergency response teams, accompanied by boats from the Klang and Seri Andalas Fire and Rescue Stations, were promptly deployed to the scene,” he was quoted as saying today.

Speaking to the Malay daily, a local who only identified himself as Wong said most residents, the majority of whom are fishermen, were at sea when the blaze started.

He claimed the fire initially took hold of a single house before engulfing adjacent properties.

“Facing the ferocious flames, both community members and volunteer firefighters jumped into action without hesitation.

“Residents took the initiative to splash water on eight neighbouring homes in an attempt to stymie the fire’s progression and avert additional damage,” said Wong.

By 2:30pm, the fire was successfully subdued, with no injuries reported, he added.

At the time of reporting, it is uncertain if there were casualties from the fire.

Images and footage of the blaze were circulating widely on social media platforms.
