MPC, shippers’ council host roundtable to boost productivity, address challenges

PETALING JAYA, Sept 6 — Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and Malaysian National Shippers’ Council (MNSC) organised a Global Shippers’ Roundtable — Navigating the Waves of Unpredictability: Building Shippers’ Resilience for the Next Normal at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya, on Sept 5, 2023.

“MPC is very pleased to collaborate with the MNSC in organising this year’s Global Shippers’ Roundtable. This event is an important platform to deliberate on key challenges and strategies to drive productivity and competitiveness in the sector. We are honoured to have had Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook as a keynote speaker for the event”, said MPC Deputy Director General Zahid Ismail.

The roundtable with a theme “Navigating the Waves of Unpredictability: Building Shippers’ Resilience for the Next Normal” served as a key platform for dialogue with the captains of industry on the development of sustainable strategies and policies for efficient movement of goods across borders.

The event addressed issues of economic importance, industry concerns, and adapting to the evolving global economic and business ecosystem for the next normal. It was also a great networking opportunity for all participants.

Guest speakers shared best practices of improving the overall efficiency and competitiveness of shippers in international trade and a special address was delivered by Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) president Tan Sri Dato’ Soh Thian Lai. The main guest speaker, Taylor’s University programme director Prof. Dr. Ong Kian Ming also shared his thoughts on Future-Proofing Malaysia’s Trade.

Three panel sessions were conducted throughout the event, with important topics such as what shippers’ should know to mitigate post pandemic challenges and leveraging on multimodal logistics to facilitate cross border regional trade.

Guest speakers for the panel sessions included industry and thought leaders from Malaysia and abroad, with representatives from the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council, American Association of Exporters and Importers (AAEI), Logistics Productivity Nexus (LPN) and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, who shared their experiences on trade and logistics.

During the event, MPC launched the export and import procedures in Malaysia Guidebook. The document serves as a useful guideline for players in the logistics industry.

The roundtable event supported Malaysia’s Madani Economy aspirations to drive the productivity of the nation, particularly for the logistics sector. In turn, this will facilitate higher competitiveness for a more robust and sustainable economic development, to enable businesses to prosper, and the rakyat to enjoy a better quality of life.

Given its significance to the economy, the logistics sector has huge potential to generate highly productive economic activities that will benefit industry players, the employees and the nation as a whole, despite challenges in domestic and global economies.
