HULU LANGAT, 20 Sept — The state government has given its commitment to assist victims of a thunderstorm that wreaked havoc in five areas in Beranang yesterday, including repairing their homes.
State executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi said he will address the matter in the State Executive Council meeting as soon as possible, for allocation approval.
He said the Hulu Langat District and Land Office will also carry out a survey to identify the damage caused by the disaster, with a full report expected to be completed within three days.
“We will inspect the damage before beginning repair works, since there are houses which suffered total damage, while some involved damaged only in certain parts of their house, like roofs being ripped off due to fallen trees.
“Similarly, (we will look at) the losses incurred by the victims. After that, follow-up actions (repairing works) will be done,” Mohd Najwan said during his visit to the temporary relief centre (PPS) at Surau Tengah Kampung Sesapan Batu Rembau, Beranang, earlier today.
Also present was the state executive councillor for welfare Anfaal Saari and Selangor Menteri Besar (Incorporated) or MBI’s corporate social responsibility and communications chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor.
A total of 43 victims from 10 families are currently placed at the PPS.
He said Selangor Volounteers (Serve) has also been mobilised to help in cleaning up the victims’ homes.
Although no casualties were reported, several suffered injuries, all of whom have been treated.
The thunderstorm in Beranang, which Najwan described as the second worst disaster in the state in recent times after the 2021 massive flooding, affected 370 victims from 96 households.
They include residents from Kampung Paya Tanjung, Kampung Sesapan Batu Minangkabau, Kampung Sungai Jai, Taman PKNS Beranang, and Kampung Sesapan Batu Rembau.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Azri said MBI will be distributing financial aid to the victims, to ease their burdens.
He said the amount will be decided during the council meeting, which is expected by today.
“There will be financial aid from MBI when a disaster occurs. I have discussed the matter with MBI’s disaster management unit, on how they can assist with donations.
“We will be together with the state government to help them. However, the amount is undecided. We will wait for the council (for a decision), maybe this evening,” Ahmad Azri said.
