SHAH ALAM, Sept 14 — Universiti Selangor’s (Unisel) considerably lower tuition fees compared to other private institutions have provided wider education opportunities for students, including those from financially underprivileged families.

In fact, Unisel vice-chancellor Prof Dato’ Mohammad Redzuan Othman revealed that over 60 per cent of its students comprise those from low income households.

“As a university that emphasises excellence and not one looking to make profit, Unisel offers tuition and hostel fees, among others, that are relatively much lower.

“This is to provide education opportunities to individuals from all walks of life,” he said during a Yayasan Unisel (Yusel) dinner programme, here, last night.

Among those to grace the event include Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and his spouse Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad.

Over 200 Uniself staff and donors of the foundation were also present.

Commenting on Yusel, Redzuan, who is also Unisel president, said the foundation was set up to provide assistance to students with financial difficulties.

“There is also a need for Yusel to fund various initiatives that can help the university achieve excellence,” he said.
