Upgrading of FM transmitters in final phase — Teo

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 — Upgrades to frequency modulation (FM) transmitters are nearly complete, said Teo Nie Ching.

The Deputy Communications and Digital Minister said the work, involving 35 sites, will be complete by the end of 2024.

Teo said Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) has upgraded 61 of 96 local FM transmitter stations since 2019.

“Efforts by RTM show that radio plays an important role in effectively disseminating information to the people.

“I am optimistic these efforts will allow radio to remain a crucial medium to communicate the unity government’s initiatives to the people,” she said in her welcoming remarks at Radiodays Asia 2023 here today.

Teo said Radiodays Asia 2023 is the perfect gathering for those who want to better understand current and future challenges for radio, audio and podcasting. Participants will share, learn and explore the potential of these mediums, she said.

She said in this era of fake news and disinformation, radio is a trustworthy source. It reflects real-time occurrences and counters disinformation amid global and national events.

Just as importantly, she said, audio can celebrate culture, entertainment and music, and give listeners a sense of community and belonging.

As new consumer behaviour in the digital era challenges all mediums, Teo said Radiodays Asia allows industry leaders to share solutions.

“Radio is not stale even though it has been around for years. It has evolved to stay relevant on all types of digital platforms.

“With the rise in podcasting, we see audio attracting younger audiences, with many becoming podcasters. Podcasting has grown fast and created plenty of exciting opportunities and possibilities for the future,” she said.

The fourth edition of the conference sees top international speakers, industry leaders, producers and market experts sharing their insights. The two-day event will host 50 sessions, beginning today.
