WTE tech provides high value as Selangor focuses on industries — MB

SHAH ALAM, Sept 20 — Waste-to-energy technology will be a focal point in the future due to its impact on the state’s economy, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the matter has been emphasised since 2018. Recently, aspects of exploration and the feasibility of the industry were discussed with representatives of the local authorities.

“This is one of the strategies we are implementing within the next two to three years. If possible, we will include it in the 2024 Selangor Budget, so the high-value recycling economy can be realised.

“This industry can generate new energy and reduce electricity consumption. We believe this new corporate image and compactors can enhance our capabilities,” Amirudin said.

Speaking at the launch of the new compactors and KDEB Waste Management’s (KDEBWM) corporate image earlier today, he said the state government are also exploring alternatives or new formulas for waste collection in traditional village areas.

“At present, corporate social responsibility waste collection is managed by Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI. However, in certain areas like Hulu Langat, Kampung Delek, and Rantau Panjang (in Klang), there are many commercial activities like pasar malam.

“We will consider a payment system for commercial agencies to manage this waste. Perhaps using small vehicles and periodic collections, once a week or every two weeks, which can in turn generate funds for KDEBWM,” Amirudin said.

During the event on the grounds of the State Secretariat Building, the Menteri Besar launched the new compactor trucks owned by KDEBWM, a state-owned subsidiary, which are coloured red and yellow, in line with Selangor’s theme.

The launch of these assets coincides with the extension of the contract between KDEBWM and the Klang Municipal Council (MPK), which comes into effect on October 1 for a period of seven years. KDEBWM introduced the new compactor trucks, giving them a bolder image.

Its managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir said the company has allocated RM30 million to provide the trucks, which are also in line with the slogan #KitaSelangor.

“Implementation began in Klang as MPK was the first to use our services in 2016. Early next year, we will expand to other local authorities.

“Today marks the second phase for KDEBWM. In the past, we used blue and white trucks with a capacity of 16 tonnes, and this time, we are using 75 red and yellow trucks with capacities of 18 and 19 tonnes.

“With this new size, more efficient and capable waste collection can be carried out. With the state theme colours and this image change, we provide a fresher and bolder service and manifest ourselves as a proactive industry player,” he said.

At the event, Amirudin witnessed the symbolic handover of keys between Ramli and MPK president Noraini Roslan, representing the contract extension.
