MB: NIMP a chance to address past mistakes, create added-value economy

SHAH ALAM, Oct 26 — The New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 seeks to rectify the planning mistakes of past decades by creating an economy which adds value to our existing strengths, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

These strengths include manufacturing and exploring fields not yet fully mature, like aerospace, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, chemicals, and the halal industry.

“Selangor, as the nation’s economic hub with a vision to become the Gateway to Asean, is in the best position to seize these opportunities by strengthening a dual-function government system that is people-oriented and business-friendly,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

Amirudin added the alignment and shared objectives of the state and Federal governments is conspicuous as the state government and the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry (Miti) conducted a town hall session recently, focusing on two issues.

“The first is in preparing to formulate the 2024 Selangor Budget, and the second is to open doors for cooperation within Selangor’s industries, particularly the new opportunities presented in NIMP 2030 launched by the Prime Minister last month.

“During the town hall with Miti Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, I pledged the state government’s commitment in successfully realising NIMP 2030’s guiding principles, based on the ‘mission-based economy’ concept advocated by renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato,” he said.

Citing the premature deindustrialisation Malaysia underwent in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Amirudin said this led to a lack of new job opportunities in emerging fields, which subsequently meant Malaysia became an economy heavily reliant on low wages and foreign labour.

“As such, the system is crucial to realising the opportunities under the First Selangor Plan, particularly for its three new economic factors; the Integrated Development Region in South Selangor (Idriss) initiative, the Sabak Bernam Development Area (Sabda) initiative, and the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project along Sungai Klang.

“Stay tuned for the 2024 Selangor Budget’s presentation next month, InsyaAllah,” he said.

Amirudin is expected to table the budget on November 10 during the State Legislative Assembly sitting.

During the tabling of this year’s budget on November 25 last year, the state government allocated RM2.45 billion, comprising RM1.25 billion in operating expenditure and RM1.20 billion in development expenditure.
