MBI in process of acquiring EU certification for large-scale fisheries

By Sheeda Fathil

KUALA SELANGOR, Oct 14 — Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI is currently acquiring European Union (EU) certification for its large-scale fisheries projects via the Sabak Bernam Development Area Plan (Sabda).

According to its chief operating officer Saipolyazan M Yusop, the primary goal is to guarantee the projects’ compliance with EU standards, obtain recognition, and foster economic growth in northern Selangor’s downstream economy.

Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) chief operating officer Saipolyazan M Yusop speaks to the press after the Graduation Ceremony for Fiber Optic Technician (FOT) Programme at the Selangor Technical Skills Development Center (STDC) in Kuala Selangor, on October 13, 2023.

“We are establishing a downstream processing facility for fishery products which meets the criteria for export to Europe. This is why adhering to the EU assessment standards is essential.

“We are confident that after the development project, it will not only attract foreign investors but also create opportunities for the locals to generate their income,” he said during the Graduation Ceremony for Fiber Optic Technician (FOT) Programme at the Selangor Technical Skills Development Center (STDC) yesterday.

MBI is also working with universities to develop aquaculture projects involved in producing high-value fish seeds.

“We will collaborate with the residents interested in participating in the fishing industry, aiming to increase their income in the future,” Saipolyazan said.

In June, Menteri Besar Dato Seri’ Amirudin Shari said two large-scale fisheries projects in Sungai Lang and Sekinchan under Sabda are expected to draw up to RM600 million in investments.

He said the high-impact project, totalling approximately RM100 million, is expected to be completed in 2027 and will generate employment opportunities within the district over the next ten years.

The project, which is part of the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), encompasses high-value agricultural development aimed at achieving long-term food security for the local market.
