SHAH ALAM, Nov 20 — Universiti Selangor (Unisel) has awarded RM23 million in scholarships to 1,700 students at the foundation level since 2016, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the state-owned university offers 10 scholarship schemes to ease the financial load of students pursuing their tertiary education at the institution.
“In terms of financial aid, data from Unisel showed that 64 per cent of its students are from the B40 (low-income) group.
“Unisel has provided several scholarship schemes, including Skim Dermasiswa, to support the students who fall into this category.
“The initiatives aim to assist financially challenged students and prevent them from dropping out due to their financial difficulties,” he said at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, here today.
Amirudin was responding to a question from Batu Tiga assemblyman Danial Al-Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid on the number of Unisel students dismissed due to financial constraints and the institution’s efforts to address the issue.
Meanwhile, Amirudin said that financial issues had not resulted in the dismissal of any students, as most of the cases were due to non-compliance with academic rules or failure to register for the semester.
However, he said there have been students who voluntarily applied to discontinue their studies because of financial difficulties.
He said in 2020, 16 students had applied to drop out due to financial limitations, 41 in 2021, 19 in 2022, and 18 in 2023.
“These students had voluntarily decided to quit and were not dismissed by Unisel,” he added.
