More flood victims in Kedah tonight; situation eases in Perak

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 — The number of flood victims in Kedah continues to rise while floods in Perak improve tonight.

In Kedah, the total number of flood victims increased to 210 from 68 families tonight compared with 107 victims from 34 families this morning.

The Kedah Civil Defence Force Disaster Management secretariat head, Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain, said two temporary relief centres (PPS) were opened in the Kota Setar district.

“The two PPS are at SK Titi Gajah and SMK Alor Merah with 85 and 94 additional victims, respectively, as of 8pm tonight following a heavy downpour in the evening.

“Another PPS was opened in Kota Setar at SK Taman Aman at 5pm, but the number of victims housed is being enumerated,” he said in a statement tonight.

The centre was opened on Monday (November 13) following three hours of heavy rain which flooded several areas. Among them were Kampung Lahar, Kampung Paya Tok Keong, Kampung Paya Tok Teh, and Kampung Biak in the district.

It is a different situation in Perak where flood victims in three districts tonight continue to fall to 187 people from 54 families compared to 217 people from 62 families this morning with two PPS closed late this afternoon.

The Perak State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the Chikus Multipurpose Hall PPS was closed at 6.30pm while the Sri Kinta Public Hall PPS was closed at 7pm yesterday.

Four PPS are still operating, namely the Shooting Range Multipurpose Hall PPS in Hilir Perak, with 98 people from 29 families sheltering in the PPS.

“In Kerian, 23 people from four families are still at SK Changkat Lobak PPS, while the number of flood victims at SK Alor Pongsu PPS also remains at 57 people from 19 families,” it said in a statement.

In the Kinta district, nine people from two families are still in Dewan Orang Ramai Taman Meru 2A PPS.
