Nearly 4,000 students graduated from state TVET programmes since 2018

SHAH ALAM, Nov 17 — A total of 3,957 students have graduated from Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes offered by the Selangor government from 2018 to October 2023, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Detailing the state’s commitment to enhancing TVET, Amirudin said around RM15 million has been allocated towards these programmes during this period.

He also noted that the state has struck strategic collaborations with leading industry players such as Daikin, Perodua, Yamaha, Zesto, Apple, Dassault Systemes, and the Technical University of Munich.

These partnerships are pivotal in ensuring that TVET graduates are equipped with skills that are in high demand in the industry, thereby enhancing their job prospects, he said.

“These programmes provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary for various industries. As a means to further attract young people to join TVET, the state government has set minimal requirements for TVET courses, namely basic literacy, numeracy and writing skills.

“Additionally, funding has been allocated under the Smart Selangor Technical Skills and Expertise Initiative (Iktisass) to help reduce costs for individuals from B40 and M40 families who wish to pursue TVET education, particularly in state-run institutions.

“We are also working to identify collaborations with schools because we want to ensure TVET is not only focused on students who are unable to further their studies to the tertiary level, but also on high-achieving students who can pursue higher education in TVET,” he said in the State Legislative Assembly today.

Amirudin was responding to a question from Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran on the initiatives taken to enhance TVET in the state.

The Menteri Besar said further emphasis will be placed on TVET through the establishment of the Selangor Jobs and Skills Council and the expansion of Universiti Selangor to include TVET courses, as announced in the 2024 Selangor Budget.
