Selangor’s public transport system going electric in 2024

By Danial Dzulkifly

SHAH ALAM, Nov 10 — In a move towards being a carbon-neutral state, electric vehicles (EVs) will be introduced into Selangor’s public transport system from January next year, says Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the initiative will integrate EVs into the state’s Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) services and its existing Smart Selangor buses, starting with two electric buses to kick off the transition.

“The move will be implemented in phases until the entire Selangor Smart Bus service uses  electric buses,” he said during the 2024 Selangor Budget tabling at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, today.

Amirudin said plans are also in place to replace fuel-engine vehicles with EVs for the official use of state executive council members and department heads as part of its efforts to promote low-carbon transportation from next year.

“This change, however, hinges on securing financially viable solutions through collaborations with service providers.”

Amirudin said the state government would also establish ‘green routes’ that include EV charging stations and battery replacement facilities for motorcycles, which the details will be unveiled soon.

He added that the state government will also set up 1,000 EV charging stations, backed by an RM1 million allocation and partnerships with private entities such as Gentari under Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, and other key players.
