SHAH ALAM, Nov 13 — State executive councillor for youth Najwan Halimi has hit out at PAS Youth after the latter issued a false allegation claiming that Selangor’s Syariah law is under threat.
Taking to social media site X, the Kota Anggerik assemblyman stressed that the sovereignty of the Syariah law remains intact in the state.
He pointed out the nobility of the Islamic religion is continuously upheld and staunchly defended by the Sultan of Selangor.
“All legal matters involving Islamic affairs in Selangor are subject to the state’s Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment.
“Stop your slander and false accusations PAS Youth!” he said today.
His comment comes in response to PAS Youth’ statement on X that the Syariah criminal law in the country is at risk of being compromised, adding that this is already the case in Selangor.
“The Syariah law is being deliberately challenged by enemies of Islam. They have succeeded in Selangor,” the post read.
PAS Youth’s is in relation to a constitutional challenge filed by lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid and her daughter Tengku Yasmin Natasha Tengku Abdul Rahman last year to nullify 20 provisions of the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment.
The mother-daughter pair claimed the Kelantan legislative assembly has no powers to enact criminal laws as these belonged exclusively to Parliament.
On September 30 the same year, Federal Court judge Datuk Vernon Ong Lam Kiat heard arguments by lawyers for the two women and the Kelantan government, before deciding on the same day to allow the two women to commence their court challenge.
The apex court is set to resume hearing of the family’s challenge on November 20.
