SHAH ALAM, Nov 22 – The state government is contemplating discontinuing its Smart Selangor Wifi service after findings showed that it was primarily used for gambling, games, girls and gossip, which state executive councillor for innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah described as ‘4G contents’.
In his address to the State Legislative Assembly, Fahmi said the free wifi service, which is predominantly used for streaming short videos, does not contribute meaningful value to the society.
“Our review of the Smart Selangor Wifi facilities has led us to realise that the service is not substantially benefiting the community.
“Most users are engaging in activities related to gambling, games, girls and gossip. Chiefly, they are watching short videos that offer little educational or informative value,” he said today.
He was answering a question posed by Ijok assemblyman Jefri Mejan on the state government’s progress in providing internet access to rural areas.
To promote more constructive uses of technology, Fahmi said the state is now directing its efforts towards improving Selangor public libraries and establishing more Digital Economy Centers (PEDi), which is under the purview of the Communications and Digital Ministry,
“These initiatives are designed to elevate knowledge and economic conditions, particularly for the B40 community in rural areas. This approach will also reduce the dependence on Smart Selangor Wifi,” he said.
Currently, 48 PEDi centres have already been set up in Selangor, with an additional 35 centres being planned for establishment next year, said Fahmi.
