Covid-19: No movement restrictions, public advised to mask up

By Danial Dzulkifly

SHAH ALAM, Dec 18 — Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has guaranteed there will be no return of a movement control order (MCO), first implemented during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, amid the current rise in cases.

In a press conference today broadcasted online, he addressed the growing public concerns over the recent surge in Covid-19 cases.

Dr Dzulkefly emphasised that the health authorities have implemented measures to manage the situation effectively, eliminating the need for stringent movement restrictions like the MCO.

“The recent spike in Covid-19 cases, which is also evident in neighbouring countries, is indeed concerning.

“However, our health system is prepared, and we believe we can navigate this surge without resorting to an MCO,” he said.

Dr Dzulkefly also assured that the Health Ministry (MOH) is ready to face the surge of cases by mobilising necessary health assets.

“The MOH is closely monitoring hospital capacities. We are prepared to manage any increase in admissions and ready to mobilise support from teaching hospitals, military hospitals, private facilities, and NGOs,” he said.

This came after public health officials recorded 20,696 Covid-19 cases for the epidemiological weeks 50 or from December 10 to December 16, which saw a 62.2 per cent increase compared to the week before.

Out of the figure, 151 required treatment in Intensive Care Units, 96 cases requiring respiratory support, and 28 reported deaths.

Following the surge, Dr Dzulkefly advised the public not to panic and urged them to mask up in closed spaces, especially the elderly, and practice close contact procedures if they show symptoms.

“It is also advisable for you to inform close contacts, as what was practised during the pandemic, and other ‘new normal’ practices,’’ he said.

Dr Dzulkefly reiterated the preventive measures against the virus, including testing, contact tracing, reporting, quarantine, masking up, getting booster vaccinations, and seeking treatment.

He added the MOH has strengthened the Covid-19 Management Plan through five main strategies, including:

  1. Early detection at international gateways.
  2. Implementation of the test, report, isolate, inform, seek (TRIIS) framework.
  3. Monitoring health facilities.
  4. Management and control of Covid-19 cases, particularly for high-risk groups.
  5. Community empowerment through effective risk communication and digitalisation of the health system via the MySejahtera app.
