MB urges public to contribute to waqf for Muslim community development

SHAH ALAM, Jan 10 — Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has urged people of the state to contribute to Islamic endowment (waqf) to support the development of real estate institutions for the benefit of the Muslim community.

Amirudin said the public can refer to the Selangor Wakaf Corporation (Wakaf Selangor) for more information on the matter.

“Here, we have Wakaf Selangor which oversees all assets, including funds that are endowed for the construction of buildings, institutions, and other assets and premises beneficial to the Muslim community, like mosques and schools.

“Therefore, I call on the people of Selangor, as well as state subsidiaries and officials, to contribute to waqf through guidance from Wakaf Selangor,” he said in a video shared by the state statutory body.

Yesterday, Wakaf Selangor chairman Datuk Ibrahim Md Yusof and five of his officers paid a courtesy visit to the Menteri Besar’s official residence.

The purpose of the visit was to share information about the corporation’s role as a waqf institution and the direction of its development on matters pertaining to real estate, economy and Islamic community through the concept of waqf.

The two parties also discussed the waqf project proposed by Amirudin during his tabling of the 2024 Selangor Budget, namely the development of student hostels in Egypt, and the Menteri Besar’s desire to see more state officials contribute to waqf.

Previously, when tabling the 2024 Selangor Budget in November, Amirudin announced the allocation of RM5 million to strengthen the management of the state’s Islamic endowment and support its students studying abroad.

He said the strategic move will see a substantial part of the fund allocated towards establishing a Middle East Student Development and Management Trust Fund to develop a second ‘Rumah Selangor’ project in Egypt for students’ accommodation, among other things.
